Introduction:
We frequently come across the term 'Proof of Concept' (POC) in academic papers, and product/project development. But, do we fully understand this term and how it differs from 'Prototype'? How it used in medical, business, and cybersecurity can bring different definitions? Today we are going to dive deeper into this term and become fully aware of the importance of POC in product/project development.
What is POC?
POC (Proof of Concept) is an exercise in the development process mainly to demonstrate the functionality of ideas and theory of concept that 'can be achieved' in the development process. In simple words, the product/project will go through POC to give a clear picture of what features can be added to it, how these features will perform, and do it really necessary.
- POC stands for Proof Of Concept
What is POC in Medical Studies?
Research and development of medical devices or medicine on average costs of over €1 billion and takes more than 12 years. This makes it crucial for it to go through a very careful process in development to avoid any waste of resources. POC (Products Of Conception) in medical studies usually done by trials of the medical products. These trials usually performed by giving a group of patients with active medicine and giving another group with a placebo or dummy medicine. This type of trial is called the 'placebo-controlled' method. There are other types of the trial such as 'Randomised' and 'Double-blind' that can be used in POC stages of medical products. These trials will help in development by giving information on how the product can perform and what can be done to make it perform better. POC in medical research and development can also mitigate the risk of any uncertainty of the medical products after its completion.
In medical term,
- POC stands for Products Of Conception
What is the POC in the Business and Cyber Security term?
The term 'Proof Of Concept' is definitely can differ in interpretation in different areas. In the business area, POC can be translated into a demonstration to verify and seek the certainty of certain theories and ideas whether it can be applied in the real world. Every day, numbers of newcomers that jump into the market and these newcomers need to put extra effort into product differentiation through research and development. POC in the business point of view is not intended to seek any idea about the production or to explore the market needs, but to become certain that existing ideas will work or not and to give the developer the opportunity to explore any potential idea can be put into work. POC may seem like a prototype that cannot actually deliver but just to get the idea of what can be added to 'spice it up'. To get full advantage of POC, it must be well-planned and written.
Among the necessary things to be included in the POC plan are :- Clearly defined criteria that have to be met for success.
- Documentation describing the process of the POC, how it will be carried out.
- Evaluation components.
- A proposal on how to move forward if the POC proves to be successful.
To get a better understanding of this matter, we look at an example. Imagine if a business is selling lemonades. But there are actually some already existed businesses that sell lemonades in your area. So, you need to come up with some creative features to your lemonade to differentiate it from the existing product in the market. These creative features need POC to ensure it has real-world applicability.
POC in cybersecurity means demonstrating that certain ideas and methods could work. The main purpose of any POC would be to find a solution in any technical issues such as how the system can detect a threat in the fastest way. In the computer security world, hackers use POC (POC exploits) which is an attempt to attack against the computer or certain network with no other intention than to prove that it can be done. In other words, hackers use POC to show off the flaws in the security system of a computer or network. But, keep in mind that these hackers are actually working with the cybersecurity company to find weaknesses in the security software and enabling the company to fix any vulnerabilities of the software.
These attacks are also harmless and actually helping the company. When attacking the networks, attackers will develop a code that can be used to stimulate the attack. These codes can also be used to determine a threat level. If POC codes are published too early before the security hole is patched, it can cause a 'zero-day exploits'. 'Zero-day exploits' can be defined as malicious attacks that happen when the flaws are discovered before it was patched. This situation can leave software vulnerable to hackers and potential breaches. Cybersecurity companies stimulate attack on their own software can show their awareness of any flaws of the system and also highlight their confidence in their own software.
What is the Difference between POC and Prototype?
The terms POC 'Proof Of Concept' and Prototype are always used interchangeably but both terms actually carry a very clear and different meaning. In any product/project development, they will surely fall into both of these categories.
- POC define the feasibility of any idea of theories about the product. POC actually neglects the usability of many features in the real world. POC is used to identify any product features that can be built in the development before it happens.
- A Prototype, on the other hand, has almost all the functionalities of the end product. The differences between a prototype and the end product are it may not be as efficient, durable, and artistically designed. It is used to show the functionalities of the product/project as it considers the usability of the product/project in the real world. When building a prototype, things would go wrong. These things will then be identified and fixed to ensure the end product has no issue with its usability and functionalities.
- POC provides the idea of features that can be developed, prototype shows on how these products or features will be developed. POC can provide evidence of concept to the client for the product, explore emerging technologies, and also give the development team the opportunity to share internal knowledge about the product/project. Once the product/project is proving to be feasible, POC will be extended into an integrated working model to bring a brief of information regarding the end product.
- A Prototype can really help in bringing the ideas of the client to life. A sample of potential users can also give their feedback on the prototype. This feedback will be documented and will be used by the development team in any product improvement.
Why POC is Needed?
POC exercise is crucial in any product or project development. It provides the idea of the product and additional features that can be built. Just by developing a POC exercise, a development team can identify and fix any gaps that might interfere with the success of the product. The development team is also given the opportunity to explore more internal knowledge and information about the product. The documentation in the POC process can also help in developing other products or features in the future as these documents carry useful and accurate information on the development.
POC will act as a tool to forecast the feasibility of the product and saves the company a lot of time and resources in the development process.
